MOVIE REVIEW: Backwoods

Backwoods
Backwoods ~ 3/5

Here's what www.netflix.com says:

Backwoods

2008 R 84 minutes

A group of programmers is heading to an executive retreat in the wilderness of Northern California's Jasper Park -- where, two months earlier, a couple disappeared while camping. Will the computer geeks' training prepare them for what ensues? When a friendly paintball game turns into a fight for survival against a band of lunatic locals, the nerds must show what they're made of in this thriller starring Ryan Merriman and Haylie Duff.

My thoughts:

Good movie, it just has a repeat plot. Like so many other slasher films, they go out into the middle of nowhere. A small group, they run into many signs to turn back and ignore them. Then they run into a crazy, deformed family who wants their girls to breed & their men dead. Good story, just over played. Need new ideas. Slasher fans, it's worth a shot!!

BOOK REVIEW: Heiress Under Fire

Heiress Under Fire (Silhouette Romantic Suspense)
Heiress Under Fire ~ 4/5

Here's what www.amazon.com says:
Though heiress Farren Gage exuded a sensuous femininity that made him ache, Elam Rhule didn't need another notch on his belt. He had to eliminate a target and prevent a terrorist attack. Besides, he couldn't fall for another delicate beauty. Farren was wrong for him. Completely wrong.

Farren hadn't traveled to Turkey to find love. She'd come to discover why some foreigner wanted the millions she'd just inherited. So getting involved with an on-the-go sniper who operated outside the law was out of the question, right? Wrong. As their mission heated up so did their desire, and it looked as though two wrongs might just make the most perfect right....

My thoughts:

Enjoyed the book, it had a good storyline, interesting characters & a suspense. The romance was interesting, intriguing & sweet. I really enjoyed it. I liked the twist of adding her father to the mix. What I didn't like was the terrorist character's habits/traits. Didn't seem to fit that of a terrorist to me, a little light or shall I say weak.

TASTE OF HOME WITH LAY'S PLUS GIVEAWAY!!!

Hi everyone!! I'm here to tell you about great new chips from Lay's, and I'm entering a contest by posting this!! Also, I will be giving away LAY'S chips, provided by them!

Lay's new Regional Flavors come in the following varieties:

These chips were inspired by popular American regional cuisine and include:

1. Northeastern U.S. – Lay’s Honey Mustard

2. Midwestern U.S. – Lay’s Creamy Garden Ranch

3. Northwestern U.S. – Lay’s Balsamic Sweet Onion

4. Southwestern U.S. – Lay’s Chipotle Ranch

5. Southeastern U.S. – Lay’s Cajun Herb & Spice

Here's a bit more info on the new chips:

All of the Lay's Regional Flavored potato chips are made with all natural ingredients and cooked in healthier oils, like corn and sunflower oils, which contain 80% or more of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat - the "good fats." They also contain 0 grams of trans fats per serving!

Another tidbit of info:

There’s also less sodium in them than you might think – a 1-oz serving of our Lay’s Regional Flavored potato chips contains less salt than a plain bagel!

If I could choose the next flavor, I'd choose my own recipe:
Nachos & Cheese
I created this on my own, my family are big fans of nachos & cheese, we have them quite often. Not just as dinner, but as a snack, appetizer & often at parties. Standard nachos were just not cutting though, so I created these.

It's the simplest recipe ever!
Hamburger, Cheese Sauce & Taco Seasoning. You fry up your hamburger, add the taco seasoning & then the cheese sauce.

It's a favorite staple at our house & a frequent request from friends & family alike. It's always the talk of the party!

Since learning of the new Lay's flavors, I've decided I'd like to try the Cajun Herb & Spice or the Tangy Carolina BBQ. Looking forward to trying them all at some point though!

Now, do you want to try them too?

Lay's is sponsoring a giveaway through my blog. To enter to win a variety pack of these flavors, just leave a comment on my blog. Include which flavor you'd like to try! Contest ends: August 24th, 2011

BOOK REVIEW: Justice for Some

Justice for Some

Justice for Some ~ 4/5

Here's what www.amazon.com says (from Publisher's Review):

Heading for a family gathering at her father's home/water garden business in rural California, widowed Sarah Drexler anticipates a respite from her work as an Oregon state judge. Instead she finds her deductive skills challenged and the lives of those dearest to her threatened. Joining the tense family dinner is Fran Donatio, a woman whose presence Sarah's father Ralph does not explain. The next morning, after Ralph's body is pulled from a lily pond, police Lt. Arthur Fernandez arrives with questions on another matter: Fran, a PI, was shot not long after leaving the dinner, and it looks like the murderer ransacked her office and apartment. Sarah becomes decidedly snappish when the police suggest that her adult children, Winnie and Virgil, and Ralph's brother and nephew all had ample opportunity to search Fran's digs. When the judge turns sleuth, she learns that her loved ones harbor past and present secrets of which she had no inkling. That Sarah's investigation is first-rate is no surprise--the prolific Wilhelm ( Death Qualified ; Seven Kinds of Death) is also accomplished. This tale, however, offers a bonus in Fernandez who, running his own, equally intelligent investigation in the background, provides a welcome change from the expected solitary-sleuth plot structure.

My thoughts:

The book started off slow, I couldn't get focused. Maybe it was too many characters all at once or too many plots woven together. However, when I took a break and tried to read the book again, I really got into it. The mystery is very entwining and kept me searching for who did it. Good book!

**New Alcoholic Drink**

I went shopping with my mom on Monday, we went all over the place! I got School Shopping finished, groceries, goodwill & even a trip to the local party center. I usually don't go there. We used to go there to get my dad's cigarettes when he was alive, but hadn't been there is quite a while. When we were checking out, we noticed a shelf of flavored vodkas. I have been wanting to try some of them, so I was excited. Our local Rite Aid only has cherry flavored. Well, I got the Whipt Cream flavor. It was soooooooooooooo yummy! The smell is slight, very vanilla-y. I didn't try a shot, but tasting it off my finger, it wasn't very alcohol tasting either. We mixed it with Orange Fanta. It tasted exactly like a Orange Dreamsicle Popsicle!! yum!! If you like em, I recommend this drink!!

12 days til I'm 30 & today, I began something new!

My birthday is coming up soon, only 12 more days!! I will be the big 3-0! I'm not worried about it like most of my friends are though. Everyone else dreads being 30, I am not worried about it. I could have been 30, after all the growing up I've done since I was 15.

Anyway, I got mail today. It's my first step toward a job in over 2 years! I am excited. I want to be a SAHM, but I will be babysitting for a friend. She has 3 kids, ages 10, 7 & 4. She needs a sitter while she works. She's beginning a new job this coming week & wants a reliable sitter. Which is me :) I am excited cause I can be home with my kids & get paid for it!! Yeah!! Wish me lots of luck!!

My Son, He's Gonna Make a Wonderful Man One Day!

I just want to say, boys who learn it's ok to cry when they are little will turn out to be good men. My son loves to watch movies & tv shows with me. Usually it's movies like Batman or Spiderman, sometimes he wants to watch a horror flick with us. He does watch "girly" shows with his sister & me, things like Teen Mom, he adores Maci & Farrah, Bad Girls Club & other shows like that. Today though, he happened to be up super early, before his usually "awake at dawn" sister. He layed on the couch with his pillow & blanket & caught up on The Secret Life of the American Teenager. We were catching up on last season since Netflix has some of them on there. The final episode today, the one where Ben & Adrian find out their baby has passed away & everyone arrives thinking it's a happy moment. It turnd out to be a super sad one, I bawled my eyes out. At the end, when I was wiping away my tears, my 10 year old little boy looks at me & says, "Wow Mommy, that was so sad. I was crying!" He's such a sweetheart. This isn't the first time he's cried over something sad, and I hope he will always carry in his heart that it's ok to cry when something's sad or hurts you. I'm very proud of my little guy!

BOOK REVIEW: Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America

Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America ~ 4/5

Here's what www.amazon.com says:
Acclaimed as an instant classic upon publication, Nickel and Dimed has sold more than 1.5 million copies and become a staple of classroom reading. Chosen for “one book” initiatives across the country, it has fueled nationwide campaigns for a living wage. Funny, poignant, and passionate, this revelatory firsthand account of life in low-wage America—the story of Barbara Ehrenreich’s attempts to eke out a living while working as a waitress, hotel maid, house cleaner, nursing-home aide, and Wal-Mart associate—has become an essential part of the nation’s political discourse.

Now, in a new afterword, Ehrenreich shows that the plight of the underpaid has in no way eased: with fewer jobs available, deteriorating work conditions, and no pay increase in sight, Nickel and Dimed is more relevant than ever.

My thoughts:

The book was wonderful, it really showed what it takes for someone to actually get a job that pays something in America. Yes, the minimum wage has gone up, but so has EVERYTHING else! I hope this book opens the eyes of others who read it too.

MOVIE REVIEW: Masters of Horror: Don Coscarelli: Incident On and Off a Mountain Road

Masters of Horror: Don Coscarelli: Incident On and Off a Mountain Road ~ 3/5

Here's what www.netflix.com says:
2005 NR 51 minutes

Chased through the night woods by the maniacal Moonface (John De Santis), Ellen (Bree Turner) defends herself by rigging a series of booby traps she learned from her cruel survivalist husband (Ethan Embry). But her tricks may not be enough to stave off the creepy predator. Writer-director Don Coscarelli, of Phantasm and Beastmaster fame, adapted this entry in the Showtime series from a short story by cult horror writer Joe R. Landsdale.

My thoughts:

It was an ok movie, typical thrasher, back woods movie. Until the twist at the end! Love these movies off of fear net!!

Slow, Boring Day!

I got caught up on The Secret Life of the American Teenager ~ I love the show, but it's overly focused on sex! My!!

Then I got on-line for daily & weekly contests, then I had time to play on facebook & also got some great freebies today! Signed up for alot of stuff :)

Kids got chores done quickly & my son went to the pool. It's almost closing time for our local pool ~ August 14th.

Had a nice dinner & watched a movie after. Now finishing up some alone time & then spending some cuddle time with my hubby :)

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Nice day today :)

We started off today, walking across town. We walked over 25 blocks. It was nice excercise. The kids didn't even really complain much, they were glad not to have to walk uphill though!

Got to the mall around 11, shopped at K-mart. They had great deals on 2, 4 & 10 packs of movies. I put some of them & a few Christmas gifts on lay-a-way. I had an old cancelled one, so I used that money to do a new one! Love lay-a-ways!! :)

Then we had lunch, sausage pizza & cheese bread @ Little Ceasars! Love their food, it was delicious as always!!

The movie went great, it was fun & a movie for everyone: Check out my review!!

Then my son decided to head to the pool for an hour, my daughter started the chicken for dinner & I got an hour to relax! Made dinner & had our 3rd family dinner @ our new table!!

After dinner was a movie & dessert. A little on-line time, now time for bed. Had a wonderful day with my kiddos today!!

MOVIE REVIEW: Masters of Horror: John Landis: Family

Masters of Horror: John Landis: Family ~ 4/5

Here's what www.netflix.com says:
Masters of Horror: John Landis: Family(2007) NR

Don't mind Harold Thompson (George Wendt), the mild-mannered bachelor in this idyllic suburban neighborhood -- he's just a serial killer. And he has his sights set on his hot new neighbor Celia (Meredith Monroe). But when he invites her to be a part of his "family," the suburbs get messy. Horror ace John Landis, working in the same satirical vein as David Lynch's Blue Velvet, helms this darkly comic shocker of twisted suburbia.

Our thoughts:

Good plot, the man who plays Harold aka Norm from Cheers, was spectacular! He played a real creep & his torture was something I looked forward to! His "family" creeped me out majorly! Overall, a pretty good flick & the ending was a nice twist! Reminds me of Tales from the Crypt, minus the Cryptkeeper.

MOVIE REVIEW: The Smurfs

The Smurfs ~ 5/5

Here's what www.netflix.com says:
The Smurfs(2011) PG

When wicked sorcerer Gargamel tries to capture them to use as talismans for his own evil magic, the peaceful blue Smurfs flee their woodland home, pass through a magic portal and find themselves stranded in New York City. Now, Papa Smurf, Smurfette and their clan turn to a young couple (Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays) for help getting back home. Raja Gosnell directs an all-star cast that includes the voices of Jonathan Winters and Katy Perry.

My thoughts:

My husband's first thought was that they were "going to ruin it." When I went into the theater today, I thought well, he COULD be right? But, I was willing to take my chances! My daughter's favorite singer is Katy Perry, so she was really looking forward to it! Everyone in our home is a big George Lopez fan, so Grouchy was a favorite for us! He killed it once again, I laughed my butt off over his lines. He puts actual character into his lines! Overall the movie was GREAT!! I laughed, a cried, I choked on my soda lol, it was great! Must see for EVERYONE!!!

My Baby Niece is 1!!!

My niece, I'll call her Miss M :) turned the big one last Sunday, the 31st of July.

Today was her party. It was at her home, she had a wonderful turn out. Probably close to 30 people! She got spoiled bunches: dolls, stuffed animals, a pillow pet, ride on horse & lots of cute clothes!

She had a pretty Ariel cake, which she got to make herself a mess with!!

Overall, it was a fun time!! My kids had a good time. My daughter was playing with the babies while my son was running wild!

Keeping Up & Family Fun Night!!

I've been trying my hardest to keep up on here. It just seems like I always have 25,000 other things to get done too & this seems to always be last!

I'll try to do better!!

Today was Family Fun Night @ our local pool. My husband, myself & our 2 children went. My future SIL was there with her three kids. They are so adorable! My 3 1/2 year old nephew thinks its awesome to jump into his swim ring. My daughter & I spent most of our time playing with him. He's growing up too fast!! Love him to death!

They always give away prizes & my nephew won a football :) Woo-Hoo!!

They are wonderful, I love that they provide a DJ for music, free swim and a meal: hot dog, popcorn, soda & an ice cream treat. It's a great way for a family to have a great time for FREE!! My son got a beach ball shaped like a baseball. They gave away about 50 of the beach balls, just tossed em in the pool & if you got one, you could keep it. Awesome!!

MOVIE REVIEW: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules ~ 5/5

Here's what www.netflix.com says:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules(2011) PG

Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) returns to overcome ridiculous obstacles in this sequel to the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid adaptation, based on the books by Jeff Kinney. This time around, Greg must cope with the habits of his insufferable brother, Rodrick (Devon Bostick). For some reason, Greg's mom Susan (Rachael Harris) and dad Frank (Steve Zahn) are convinced that the brothers should bond.

My thoughts:

I absolutely ADORE these books!! And the movies are just as fun & exciting for the entire family! I sure hope they make all of them into movies!! My kids are big fans & so am I!!

MOVIE REVIEW: Instinct to Kill

Instinct to Kill ~ 3/5

Here's what www.netflix.com says:
2001 R 91 minutes

Tess (Missy Crider) has fooled everyone, including herself, by playing the role of the happily married wife. Yet, when her righteous cop husband, Jim (Tim Abell), gets violent, she becomes suspicious and soon discovers that he has secretly murdered nine women. She gets the drop on him and sends him to the slammer ... but Jim escapes from prison with revenge on his mind. Now, Tess must steel herself for the showdown that's sure to ensue.

My thoughts:

First off, it's based on a book. A book I have not read. I watched anyway, it started off sort of confusing. I guess you had to read the book to know what was really going on. The remainder of the movie was ok. Your typical romance novel/drama. It was ok, but very predictable.

Busy Weelend, Now I'm Mom to a TEENAGER!!

Let's see, I spent Wednesday & Thursday (July 27th & 28th) cleaning. Thursday we had moonlight swim, had a blast, water was GREAT!!

Friday, I had to bake my daughter's birthday cake, clean up & prepare for her party. Her cake turned out wonderful. We got her an Ipod Touch, she also got Squinkies, Littlest Pet Shop, 3 pair of flip flops, body sprays, lip glosses, nail polish, $25 & a ticket to see Tim McGraw on Saturday. She had a sleepover with 2 friends that night too. Her daddy & uncle missed her party because they went to a heavy metal concert.

Saturday, she helped clean up & hung out with her best friend/cousin. They are super close. We got to the concert about 6:45, it started at 7. Had a blast!! It was Tim McGraw, Luke Bryan & The Band Perry. She got a Tim McGraw bracelet. She went with me, her grandma, aunt & cousin. Didn't get home til 12:30am.

Sunday, we had church & lunch after. It went pretty good. Then we ended up taking a trip to the local park. We did mini golf, paddle boating & then met up with my best friend & her family for swimming & water slide. My hubby spent the day on the water slide. He's crazy!!

Today was a relaxing day, all minus my MIGRAINE :( My future SIL brought her boys over, then she took my niece & daughter birthday shopping. Her daughter's birthday was Sunday, she turned 1. My son & I entertained the boys with Barney, Spiderman & fake tatoos!! Had a blast!!

Now, I hope to blog more often, IF my life gets any slower!! Time to prepare for back to school & the last 3 weeks of summer vacation!
